New Delhi: The Union Ministry of Tourism has sanctioned Rs. 4.62 crores for the development of the Jog Falls as a tourist destination.

In a letter to All India Congress Committee General Secretary B.K. Hariprasad, Tourism Minister Ambika Soni said the project for development of the Jog Falls, located in the Western Ghats in Shimoga district, has already been provided Rs. 3.7 crores. The funds will be used for construction of steps at the falls and for setting up a restaurant.

As part of the project, the Jog Falls area will be developed, and three "paragolas", tourist shelters and amusement parks built in the area. Funds will be used for landscaping, illumination, renovation of a swimming pool and improvements to the parking facility, Ms. Soni said.

The Sharavati river hurtles in four cascades — Raja, Rani, Roarer and Rocket — from a height of 293 m. The Raja Fall is named after the ruler of the Sode Samsthan, who wanted to build a shrine at the falls.

Depending on the rains, September to December is considered the best time to visit the falls to see the varying effects of light and shade at different hours.

Other projects that have got the Ministry's sanction include construction of a recreation park at Devanoor in Mysore at a cost of Rs. 3.32 crores, a Rs. 1.2-crore golf links in Chikmagalur district, and integrated development of the tourism centres of Mangalore-Ullal and Udupi-Kollur, Honnavar and Murudeshwar beach. Projects worth Rs. 16.28 crores have been approved for the State and the Ministry has released Rs. 9.5 crores.

The State Government had submitted 15 proposals for 32 tourism infrastructure projects, for which Rs. 49.36 crores would be necessary, Ms. Soni wrote. — UNI
