NEW DELHI: Two ice factories, four steel polishing units, a single point delivery contractor and 1,350 houses have been detected stealing electricity worth Rs. 1 crore by the Enforcement Team of North Delhi Power Limited in the past few days. The power distribution company said on Tuesday that while one of the ice factories, Rama Ice Factory at Kishan Ganj, was stealing 119 KW of power, Raj Ice Factory at Kirti Nagar was found stealing 97 KW.
Factories
The meters installed at both these factories were found tampered and they had allegedly stolen power worth Rs. 47 lakhs. The NDPL spokesperson said the Enforcement Team also faced stiff resistance while raiding four steel polishing industries at Sanjay Market in the Wazirpur Area. In two units, the team had to break into the premises to check the meters. The units were allegedly stealing about 140 KW of power by tampering their meters and had installed 39 buffing machines (addas), lathe machines, drill machines and grinders. These units were found stealing power worth around Rs. 30 lakhs and had consequently been booked for Dishonest Abstraction of Energy (DAE). In another case of large-scale power theft, NDPL found one of its single point delivery (SPD) contractors at Jan Kalyan Samiti of Prem Nagar stealing about 300 KW of power. The contractor had allegedly tampered both the seals of his meter and was stealing close to Rs. 26 lakhs worth of electricity. However, it was the use of high technology that led to the detection and the matter came to light when the NDPL Automatic Meter Reading Research Group while using the data being downloaded from his meter conducted a tamper analysis on the meter. The theft by households was detected in areas across NDPL jurisdiction. Raids conducted in Sangam Park, Pooth Road, Prahladpur village, Nizampur village, Sawada, Mukandpur, Kabir Nagar and Krishna Vihar led to detection of about 1,350 illegal hookings through which about 800 KW of power was being stolen.
Nuisance
Stating that it had so far booked more than 13,000 cases of power theft involving a load of over 161 MW and raised a penalty of Rs. 236 crores, NDPL said people could really help curb this nuisance by reporting thefts to it.
