An MTC bus damaged near Presidency College, Triplicane on Tuesday.

CHENNAI: Tuesday was a day of protests by students in Chennai.

At least two demonstrations turned violent.

The ongoing stand-off at Satyabhama Deemed University, off Sholinganallur, between the students and the management over the demand to get All India Council for Technical Education approval for courses continued.

A demonstration on Old Mahabalipuram Road, went on for about two hours.

The students, who did not want to be identified, told The Hindu that they were totally unconvinced with the management's stand.

"The management says the matter is in court. We wonder why some deemed university managements alone should go to court challenging the AICTE's demand for details of the courses and facilities. Many other deemed universities in the State are complying," said a Biotechnology student.

In many branches, 200 students were admitted, he said.

The students alleged they were threatened by the representatives of the management.

A thatched hut for college security personnel was set on fire. The city police intervened and arranged MTC buses to bring the students to the nearest bus stops.

In another incident, `bus day' celebrations by Presidency College turned violent. Stones were thrown at a bus (No.27 B) on Pycrofts Road. The Triplicane police said a 22-year-old youth was arrested.

Road roko

A section of students of Adi Dravida Hostel at Nandanam staged a road roko on Chamiers Road protesting against the quality of food and maintenance of bathrooms.
