`Demolitions would lead to social unrest'

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Former Union Minister Vijay Goel on Tuesday said it was the failure of the planners of Delhi whose myopic vision had led to the present chaos in the Capital and warned that if the present demolition drive continues without understanding and appreciating the ground realities then it would lead to a social, economic and environmental disaster.

Addressing representatives of 50 traders' associations, Mr Goel said the Delhi Government, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi and the Delhi Development Authority were to be blamed for the crisis. He said the Congress Government has also not placed on record the facts supported by various notifications and mandate of the earlier Master Plans before the courts.

Claiming that there were different sets of laws for the rich and the poor, he said if the anomalies were not rectified then the Delhi Vyapar Andolan would be intensified and the government's incompetence and inaction would be exposed.

Former Union Finance Minister Yashwant Sinha while addressing the gathering said while the National Democratic Alliance Government was committed to protecting the interests of the common citizens and the traders, the present United Progressive Alliance Government has adopted a diametrically opposite approach.
