Former UNI Editor passes away

NEW DELHI: B.M. Ramakrishna, former Editor of the United News of India (UNI), died here on Tuesday following a heart attack. He was 76.

Mr Ramakrishna, popularly known as BMR, is survived by his wife, two sons and a daughter. The younger son, Rakesh Rao, is sports correspondent with The Hindu .

Mr. Ramakrishna was associated with UNI right from its inception in 1961. Before joining UNI, he was with the Press Trust of India (PTI) from 1948 to 1960. During his long association with UNI, he was Bureau Chief in Bombay, Patna, Nagpur, Pune, Bhopal and Colombo. He also served at the news agency's headquarters in Delhi from where he retired as Editor in 1989.

A large number of people attended the cremation at the Lodhi Road crematorium in the evening.

ASI commits suicide

NEW DELHI: A 41-year-old assistant sub-inspector allegedly committed suicide by consuming some poisonous substance in his house at Rajouri Garden in West Delhi on Tuesday. He left behind a suicide note in which he purportedly mentioned that his senior officers were harassing him.

According to the police, Harish Chander, posted with the third battalion of the Delhi Armed Police, had gone to the terrace of his house in MIG flats at Subhash Nagar around 5-30 a.m. When he did not return, his family members went upstairs looking for him. There they found him lying on the floor with forth oozing from his mouth.

Harish was rushed to Deen Dayal Upadhaya Hospital where he was declared dead on arrival. He had reportedly consumed some poisonous substance.

A suicide note, which was reportedly handed over to the police by his brother, mentioned that his senior supervisory officer had been harassing him and that he was not able to bear the torture any more.

The police said Harish was passing through a phase of depression probably due to work overload.
