THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Karnataka Association, based in the city, is getting ready to celebrate `Vasanthotsava' in association with the Karnataka Silk Industries Corporation on March 26. According to general secretary K.S. Nagesh, the association is planning to organise cultural programmes and an exhibition as part of the celebrations. The association was floated by a group of Kannadigas, mostly employed in the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre in 1971. The idea was to bring together the Kannada speaking people in the city and also provide a platform to promote the talent of the members. It was also aimed at creating a live link between Kerala and Karnataka. It has organised a series of cultural programmes with special emphasis on the history and culture of Karnataka. Several prominent artistes of Karnataka and Kerala, including Hindustani vocalist Mallikarjun Mansoor, veena artiste Doraiswamy Iyengar, and Carnatic vocalist Kamala Kailsanathan had participated in the programmes organised by the association in the city. The association gives due importance to paying homage to Purandara Dasa and organises music and dance programmes every year. Four publications, `Purandara Keerthanavali' comprising 50 compositions of Purandara Dasa with swaras and notations, `Mandara Mallige' a compilation of selected Kannada translations of Malayalam poetry, short stories, and dramas, `Maharaja Shri Swathi Thirunalara Krithi Sankalana,' a compilation of 51 selected compositions of Swathi Tirunal in Kannada and `Kerala Kalamala,' a Kannada translation of articles on major performing art forms of Kerala have been brought out by the association. It has also been in the forefront in honouring men of letters and organising interactive sessions with them.
