Mahyco Seeds conducts field demo for farmers

Staff Reporter

GUNTUR: Mahyco Vegetable Seeds Limited, which released a new hybrid variety (Vaishnavi) of chilli seeds into the market on a commercial scale last year, said that it was successful in meeting all targeted results in the field conditions.

At a field demonstration organised for farmers at Siripuram in Medikonduru mandal of Guntur district, the company's regional business manager R.M. Pillai said that the new hybrid variety sown in 250 acres in the district had shown excellent resistance to leaf curl and powdery milieu for which it was targeted.

More yield

The yield per acre also increased from 35 quintals per acre to 40 quintals per acre, he said and added that the main advantage was drastic reduction in the pesticide input cost.

With two pests kept out of bounds of the tree, farmers could continue their traditional practices and earn better results. This being a drought-resistant variety, it was promoted in Chilakaluripet, Guntur Rural, Edlapadu and Medikonduru mandals in the district, he said.

The chilli had average length of 10 cm to 12 cm with good pungency requiring less quantity of fertiliser, he said. Eight years of field trials were undergone at Jalna in Maharashtra before releasing the variety on a small scale last year, he said.

The company proposes to increase the sowing in Guntur district to 2,500 acres in the coming season this year. The divisional managers Suresh and G. Ramakrishna also attended the meeting.
