NEW DELHI: To mark the grand finale of the nine-day-long Francophonie Day celebrations, Alliance Francaise de Delhi in association with the Embassy of France will stage a world music concert by Algerian-born singer-cum-violinist Akim El Sikameya at 72 Lodi Estate here this coming Saturday. Akim sings songs rooted in Arab-Andalusia that is well established in today's world. At the age of eight, he joined El Andalous where he studied for 14 years. He succeeded in founding a band in 1990. He adapted and modernised Arab-Andalusia by adding flamenco guitar and piano to his compositions. In 1994, he left Algeria for France and chose to become a professional singer under his present name. He triumphed at the Womad Festival in Las Palmas and then embarked on a world tour. His music is a universe of enchanting Arab-Latino verses that naturally encompass Eastern melodies, flamenco music, Afro-Hispanic beats and serene ballads. His albums "Atifa Oumi" and "Aini" were released in 1999 and 2005, respectively. Before the concert, there will be live music and games for kids. Food buffs can dig into traditional food preparations from various French-speaking countries. There will also be wine tasting sessions from Luxembourg. A number of stalls by several Francophonie countries will also be lined-up. Visitors can learn how to make perfect French fries, take crash courses in French and walk home with attractive prizes.
