AGP chief not interested in contesting
Special Correspondent
Brindaban Goswami.
Guwahati:
Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) president Brindaban Goswami on Wednesday stunned the political circle by expressing his desire that the party should relieve him from contesting in the election so that he could campaign.
He said he would be happy if the party allowed him not to contest ``in the interest of the party." ``If I contest then I will have to keep myself busy in my constituencies. As a result the campaigning for other candidates would suffer."
The announcement surprised the AGP top brass as he was being projected as the chief ministerial candidate.
The party had earlier announced that Mr. Goswami would contest from Tezpur, where he won last time, and Barchalla constituency in Sonitpur district.
AGP spokesman Apurba Kumar Bhattacharyya told The Hindu that the party would not accept his appeal.
