STOCKHOLM: India-born Canadian Asit Biswas has won the annual $150,000 Stockholm Water Prize, the organisers said on Wednesday. Professor Biswas, who heads a water management group in Mexico City, was cited as one who helped ``foster a critical rethink'' among United Nations agencies, governments and others on improving the water and sanitation services delivery. Professor Biswas heads the Mexico City-based Third World Centre for Water Management. The Stockholm International Water Institute said in its citation, ``Professor Biswas is awarded the Stockholm Water Prize for his outstanding and multifaceted contributions to global water resource issues, including research, education and awareness, water management, human and international relations in both developed and developing countries.'' He will receive the prize from King Carl XVI Gustaf in Stockholm in August. The prize is given to individuals and institutions for making substantial contribution to preservation, enhancement or availability of the world's water resources. First awarded in 1991, the prize was founded by several companies, including Fujitsu Siemens, General Motors Corp., Swedish Railways and the Water Environment Federation.
