Scholarships given to khadi artisans' children

FOR EXCELLENCE: A woman entrepreneur receiving an award from State Director, KVIC, I. Jawahar, at a Khadi and Village Industries exhibition organised by the Gandhi Ashram in Namakkal.

NAMAKKAL: The Tiruchengode-based Gandhi Ashram organised a district-level Khadi and Village Industries exhibition here recently.

Importance of khadi

The exhibition was conducted with an aim to make people aware of the importance of khadi and village industries, which were providing jobs to the artisans living in remote areas, a release from the secretary of the Ashram, P. Baskaran, said.

Participating in the programme, State Director of the Khadi and Village Industries Commission, I. Jawahar, distributed 20 scholarships each worth Rs. 1,200 to the children of khadi artisans.

He also presented an award to a woman, Pappathi, a resident of Sembampalaym village, for recording higher earnings. She was serving under the silk cotton section of the Ashram.

Mr. Jawahar also handed over a cheque on behalf of the Ashram to the Branch Manager of the Life Insurance Corporation of India, Tiruchengode, Ravi, to provide insurance cover to 36 workers of the Ashram.

Earlier, Chairman of the Kandasamy Kandar Educational Trust, Velur, M. Rathinasabapathy, inaugurated the exhibition.

He handed over the cheque towards premium for the health insurance policies covering a batch of 100 artisans of village industries on behalf of the Ashram.

Divisional Manager of the United Insurance Co. Ltd., Namakkal, Kumaravel, received. Honorary Trustee S. Aravamudhan welcomed.
