MLAs asked to vote for the litterateur in the Rajya Sabha elections

DHARWAD: Channaveera Kanavi, poet and president of the Akhila Karnataka Kendra Kannada Kriya Samiti, has supported the candidature of Jnanpith Award-winner U.R. Ananthamurthy for the elections to the Rajya Sabha from the State.

Addressing presspersons here on Tuesday, Dr. Kanavi said there is a need for people in the Rajya Sabha who can efficiently present the case of the State, and Dr. Ananthamurthy fits into this category. "Kannada, the language of the State, is facing a crisis. Issues such as the medium of instruction and education for rural children need immediate attention along with those such as classical language status to Kannada, the Cauvery and the Krishna disputes and the border dispute," he said.

On behalf of the samiti he appealed to MLAs to keep aside politics for the cause of Kannada and support the candidature of Dr. Ananthamurthy.

Vice-Chancellors

Dr. Kanavi said the appointment of vice-chancellors of universities should be free of politics. Experts in education should be preferred, he added.

Chandrakanth Bellad, Mohan Nagammanavar, Veena Kulkarni, and G.B. Manwachar concurred with the views of Dr. Kanavi.
