DHARWAD: Teachers have to be roped in to spread awareness about cleft lip surgery in rural areas, Y.S. Rai, Dean, SDM College of Medical Sciences and Hospital, has said. He was speaking at a workshop for schoolteachers on cleft lip surgery organised under the auspices of Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, Dharwad, and SDM College of Dental Sciences and Hospital here on Tuesday. Already, about 2,500 cleft lip surgeries have been performed free of cost, he said. Teachers should play an active role in creating awareness among parents with regard to the deformity in their children, he added. Abdul Wazid, Deputy Director, Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, said the duty of teachers is not restricted to teaching. They have to bring dropouts back to school.
