GUNTUR: Identifying and mapping the regions that have previous history of child trafficking and are prone to it will help the Government curb the social evil, said Guntur District Collector G. Jayalakshmi. Speaking at an orientation and sensitisation programme conducted for the police personnel on anti-child trafficking laws here on Wednesday, she said that involvement of the community helped in eradicating the evil. Mapping helps in ascertaining the real causes of trafficking and the means to be adopted to control it. "Apart from social factors like poverty, there could be other factors which motivate such acts," she said. Police cannot function in isolation in such cases and they need to approach with an open mind and involve the villagers in the process. A team consisting of staff from Women and Child Welfare, Education, ICDS and police would be formed to assist in identifying the areas prone for child trafficking, Ms. Jayalakshmi said. Andhra Pradesh was among the largest suppliers of women and children for sexual exploitation. The task of preventing child-trafficking had become more challenging as about 25 per cent of the trafficked people were children, said Rammohan, coordinator of HELP -- a voluntary organisation. Police personnel from various police stations in the district took part in the programme.
