COIMBATORE: Kerala-based People's Democratic Party leader Abdul Nasser Maudhany,

who is lodged in the central prison here since 1998 in connection with the serial blasts case, had a brief reunion with his family members at the Special Court premises on Wednesday.

Maudhany's wife Sofiya used to meet him in prison until 2002, when she got into trouble with the city police for allegedly carrying mobile phones into the prison.

Counsel for Maudhany had filed an appeal before the Special Court, seeking permission for him to meet his parents at the court premises instead of the jail, citing the health condition of the PDP leader's aged parents as well as the presence of undertrials. The court granted conditional permission.

Maudhany's father Abdul Samad, mother Asma alias Fathima Beevi and brother Jamal Mohammed interacted with him for nearly half-an-hour in the presence of police personnel. On coming out of the court, the family members told reporters that "political rivalry has led to Maudhany being implicated in the blast case. Major political parties in Kerala wanted to suppress the growth of the PDP and its leader."

"Despite not a single witness giving an incriminating deposition regarding Maudhany's involvement in the case, he was not given bail or parole, even after the death of a blood relative. Such a practice is a violation of human rights," they said.

Despite being a handicapped person with a whole lot of ailments, Maudhany was languishing behind bars for long.

The family thanked the Special Court for granting the permission on humanitarian grounds, and the Kerala Assembly for passing a resolution urging the Tamil Nadu Government to show humanitarian consideration to Maudhany.
