Fifth Indian daily flight to Mumbai

CHENNAI: Indian (formerly Indian Airlines) will introduce a fifth daily service to Mumbai and reintroduce services between Madurai and Mumbai via Chennai. The will be part of its summer schedule which comes into effect from March 26.

IC-969 on the Chennai-Mumbai sector will depart at 9-15 a.m. and reach Mumbai at 11 a.m. In the return direction, IC-970 will leave Mumbai at 11-45 a.m. and arrive here at 1-30 p.m., according to a release. Flight IC-672 (Madurai-Mumbai via Chennai) will leave Madurai at 1-20 p.m. and reach Mumbai at 4-40 p.m. Flight IC-671 (via Chennai) will leave Mumbai at 9-20 a.m. and reach Madurai at 12-40 p.m. The timings of IC-587 to Bangalore have been advanced. It will leave Chennai at 6-15 a.m. (instead of 7-05 a.m.) and reach Bangalore at 7 a.m. IC-588 will leave Bangalore at 7-45 a.m. (instead of 8-40 a.m.) and reach Chennai at 8-30 a.m. — Special Correspondent

Petrol pump closed

CHENNAI: A petrol pump managed by the Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC) near Mamallapuram on East Coast Road was "closed" after Indian Oil Corporation officials detected sale of "adulterated petrol." According to official sources, the pump was a major revenue earner for the Corporation. — Special Correspondent

Programme on commodity trading

CHENNAI: A two-day awareness programme on forward/futures trading in commodities was organised by the Central Warehousing Corporation (CWC) along with the Forward Markets Commission (FMC), Mumbai, here on March 20 and 21 for officials of CWC/SWC/ commodity exchange.

Topics such as commodity trading, commodity exchanges and its interface with warehousing, commodity traders, quality aspects, grading, its significance in futures trading, role of FMCs and Indian scenario of commodity futures markets vis-a-vis global development, were dealt with by experts. Demonstration of online functioning of a commodity exchange was arranged for the trainees.

Training for students

CHENNAI: Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research will conduct six-week summer training programmes in physics and chemistry for postgraduate students entering the final year of their studies. These will comprise theoretical lecture courses and hands-on laboratory experience through projects.

Twenty students will be selected in each discipline and paid a stipend of Rs. 3,000 a month.

Candidates with first class in B.Sc. and in first semester of M.Sc. should apply in the prescribed format. The last date for submission of applications is March 31.

CHENNAI: The Postal department has decided to appoint retired Gramin Dak Sevak postmasters as field officers for Postal Life Insurance and Rural PLI business.

The applicants should not exceed 67 years of age and should have passed higher secondary or its equivalent examination. They should apply to the Principal Chief Postmaster General, Tamil Nadu Circle, Chennai 600002. — Special Correspondent

Found dead on railway track

Tuticorin: The body of an unidentified male, aged 55 years, was found on railway track here on Wednesday. The body was found on Tuticorin-Madurai route, about four km from the station here.

According to railway police, the deceased suffered severe injuries on his head, shoulder, legs and hands. They suspect that he might have been fatally knocked down by Tirunelveli-Tuticorin Passenger train which crossed the sector at 9.40 a.m.

Walk against torture and corruption

Tuticorin: Dilip Kumar Bhattacharya (65), a retired senior section engineer in the Eastern Railway, who commenced a walk against torture and corruption at Gangasagar near Kolkata on October 2, 2005 reached here on Wednesday. He covered 3,500 km to reach Tuticorin and was expected to cover another 5,000-odd km to reach Rann of Kutch in Gujarat before December 31 this year.

"My aim is to create awareness of human rights," he told the mediapersons.

Besides, I wanted to awake the people against corruption in the society."

Earlier, he was accorded a warm reception in the town at St Mary's College.

Held with explosives

PERAMBALUR : The police on Wednesday arrested a youth U. Senthil of Koothanur near Padalur on a charge of unauthorised possession of explosives. The arrest was effected when a team of police personnel, led by Inspector P. Pugazhendhi, was conducting vehicular check.

Six detonators and an equal number of gelatine sticks were seized from him.

He was produced before the court and was remanded to 15 days' judicial custody.

Voter cards

Perambalur: The electors' photo identity cards have been issued to a total of 40,902 residual voters in five Assembly segments in the Perambalur district so far since March 4.

The voters covered included 9,266 voters in the Perambalur Assembly constituency, 9,216 voters in the Varahur (Reserved) constituency, 6,246 voters in the Ariyalur constituency, 5,454 voters in the Andimadam constituency, and 10,720 voters in the Jayamkondam constituency.

Mettur level

Tiruchi : The level in the Mettur dam stood at 113.91 feet on Wednesday. The inflow was 1,458 cusecs and the outflow 2000 cusecs. — Staff Reporter.
