ANANTAPUR: The district unit of Organisation for the Protection of Democratic Rights (OPDR) has alleged that the district administration has been misleading people that there have been no deaths due to viral fever (chikun gunya). District secretary of OPDR M. Srinivasulu stated that they have information that 16 deaths have occurred in the district with the symptoms of chikun gunya from January last week. A team of OPDR has recently visited Marakuntapalli in Kothacheruvu mandal and found that four persons have fallen prey to the viral fever in February month alone. The Health Department has been washing off its hands by stating that the deaths have been occurring due to other health reasons and diseases and not due to chikun gunya. The department owes an explanation to the people as to why so many deaths have been occurring due to fever, Mr. Srinivasulu sought to know. Chikun gunya has now been spread to more than 100 villages in the district with about 10,000 affected cases The organisation has demanded conduct of special health camps and the facility of mobile hospitals to contain the disease.
