ADILABAD: The First Additional District Judge D. Minni Dhanalakshmi ordered attachment of official transport vehicles of Adilabad Collector R. Subba Rao and District Revenue Officer (DRO) B. Bharathi Lakhpathi Naik in a case of compensation in a road accident. Vodnala Sathaiah had been killed in an accident involving a Police Department jeep in 1997. - Staff Reporter

Suicide attempt

Amalapuram: A couple along with their nine-year-old son attempted suicide at Tattaramudi village in Inavelli mandal on Wednesday. Doctors declared their condition critical. However, the couple's seven-year daughter escaped, as she was playing when her parents made a bid on their lives. Huge debts the couple had run up are believed to have forced them to take the extreme step. - Staff Reporter

Chopper causes stir

TIRUMALA: The unexpected flight of a helicopter over the temple of Lord Venkateswara created mild flutter among the TTD security personnel and locals. When contacted senior TTD security officials said the helicopter belonged to the Defence Department. - Staff Reporter

Science Academy meet

HYDERABAD: An awareness programme on `Natural hazards with special reference to tsunamis and earthquakes' will be launched on March 27 by Secretary Ocean Development P.S. Goel on the opening day of the two-day annual convention of Andhra Pradesh Academy of Sciences. Two panel discussions will be organised on March 28. - Special Correspondent

Protest planned

HYDERABAD: Major trade unions in the State will protest against the four-day annual general meeting of the Asian Development Bank beginning here on May 3. The protest will be in the form of a State-level convention and regional conventions. The trade unions resolved to hold demonstrations at district headquarters on May 2 and a mass rally here the next day. - Special Correspondent

Ganja destroyed

NIZAMABAD: The Kamareddy Excise and Prohibition police on Wednesday destroyed 1.25 lakh ganja plants raised as an inter-crop in fields at Ramsingh Naik tanda of Yacharam village in Gandhari mandal. The estimated value of the plants is about Rs.3.5 crore. - Staff Reporter

Girl electrocuted

KURNOOL: A schoolgirl was electrocuted at Venkatapuram in Sirivel mandal of Kurnool district on Wednesday. According to reports, Obulamma, an eighth class student at Zilla Parishad School, was working in the field after school hours when the incident occurred. - Staff Reporter

Office-bearers elected

HYDERABAD: B. Rama Subbarayudu has been unanimously elected president of the Andhra Pradesh branch of the Indian Radiological and Imaging Association for 2006-07. The other office-bearers are: D. Giriraj, S.Surender Reddy (vice-presidents), Kishore L.T.(general secretary), N.Vijay Bhaskar, M.Adinarayan Rao (joint secretaries), Ravuri Power (treasurer). - Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: The Government has re-constituted the State-level committee of Andhra Pradesh Working Journalists Welfare Fund with Information and Public Relations Minister Mohd. Ali Shabbir as chairman and secretary/ex-officio secretary, I&PR Department as vice-chairman.

A representative of the Home, two representatives of APUWJ, two working journalists nominated by the Government, P. Venkateswarlu, Editor, Krishna Patrika, Joint Secretary, Finance, Commissioner of Labour are members. - Special Correspondent

Surabhi festival

ANANTAPUR: As part of efforts to protect the art forms like stage plays from extinction the Department of Cultural Affairs and the district administration are organising a three-day Surabhi play festival from Ugadi day here, district Collector Y.V. Anuradha stated on Tuesday. The plays would be performed in Lalitakal Parishath hall from 6.30 p.m. on March 30, 31 and April 1. They would also be staged in Dharmavaram from April 4 to 6 in Kalajyothi auditorium. - Staff Reporter

People urged to wear helmets

CHITTOOR: A rally of pillion riders wearing helmets organised by the Joint Commissioner Transport was held here on Wednesday to enlighten the public about the need of wearing helmets to save their lives. Speaking on the occasion, Joint Commissioner Santha Kumar exhorted the people about the need of wearing helmets in order to save their lives. Those who failed to wear the helmets will be liable for punishment according to the rules. - Correspondent

Blood donation camp

KURNOOL: The AISF activists donated blood at Government General Hospital here on Wednesday in connection with the 75th death anniversary of martyrs Bhagat Singh, Sukh Dev and Rajguru. Kodandarama temple fete from March 27

TIRUPATI: The annual Brahmotsavams at the TTD's Sri Kodandaramaswamy temple will be conducted from March 27 with the initiatory ritual `Ankurarpanam' on March 26. It is one of the major temples under the TTD roof, next only to the Tirumala Venkateswara and Tiruchanur Padmavathi shrines. - Staff Reporter

Drinking water situation reviewed

Srikakulam: ZP chairmanY.V. Suryanarayana has directed the official concerned to provide borewells only in villages where they are needed and not to yield to pressure of any kind.

According to him, one borewell was required for a population of 250. Reviewing drinking water situation in rural areas with the officials in the ZP conference hall on Saturday, Mr.Suryanarayana wanted defunct borewells to be notified before providing new ones. Superintending Engineer O.Rajalingam attended the meeting. - Special Correspondent

Houses of tax official raided

Srikakulam: In the simultaneous raids conducted by Anti-Corruption Bureau sleuths on the houses of M.Gandhi Krishna, Junior Inspector, in the office of Commercial Taxes, Rajam, at Srikakulam, Rajam,.G.Sigadam and Lanka , `assets disproportionate to his known sources of income' were seized.

According to Madhusudana Rao, Deputy Superintendent of Police, who headed the raids, the assets included five houses, seven house plots and more than 10 acres of agricultural lands in different towns.

A locker belonging to Gandhi Krishna had also been opened and the value of the articles were being assessed. Mr.Madhusudan Rao said that, Krishna,who was arrested ,would be produced in the ACB Special Court in Visakhapatnam tomorrow. - Special Correspondent
