Belgium offers waste management expertise

NEW DELHI: Belgium has offered its expertise in waste management, sewage treatment, street-lighting and maintenance of highways to the Delhi Government. Belgium's Economic Affairs Minister Jean Claude Marcourt along with a seven-member delegation called on Delhi Finance and Urban Development Minister A. K. Walia on Tuesday to identify areas of co-operation.

Dr. Walia apprised him of the comprehensive plan drawn by the Government to turn the Capital into a world-class city before the Commonwealth Games-2010. Mr. Marcourt said his Government would be willing to help to speed up the Delhi Government's plans.

DSIDC wins ISO certification

NEW DELHI: The Delhi State Industrial Development Corporation has won ISO certification for one of its liquor vends at the Masjid Moth DDA Shopping Centre in South Delhi. The certificate is valid till March 2009.

DSIDC Managing Director Jalaj Shrivastava said the certification came amid the Corporation's efforts to constantly improve its working keeping in mind the needs of consumers.

Rag-pickers march to highlight problems

NEW DELHI: Rag-pickers from Bal Vikas Dhara, an NGO, marched from Qutab Minar to the Deputy Commissioner's office in Kapashera here on Wednesday to highlight their problems.

Marching for dignity, they demanded that the Government recognise their profession and give them a licence to work freely.

"There are thousands of rag pickers in the city. While they play a major role in keeping the city clean, their cause and concern is hardly noticed,'' said Bal Vikas Dhara chief Debendra Baral.

National conference on automation

NEW DELHI: Northern India Engineering College is organising a two-day national conference on Automation in Manufacturing Technology" at its campus in Shastri Park here from this Friday.

The conference is aimed at creating an opportunity for researchers and experts to interact and share the latest developments in the field of mechanical and automation engineering. Open to corporate members, educationists and research scholars, the conference will also include an exhibition of products.

Sentenced for rape

NEW DELHI: A city court on Wednesday sentenced a 30-year-old-man to seven years' imprisonment for raping a woman in R.K. Puram here two years ago. Patiala House Court Additional Sessions Judge (ASJ) S. P. Garg held Kamal Sadai guilty of raping the woman and sentenced him to seven years' imprisonment. The court further slapped a fine of Rs. 500 on Kamal.
