KOLLAM: Chairperson of the Kerala Women's Commission M. Kamalam has said that mere enactment of rules will not prevent atrocities against women. She was inaugurating a seminar on "Domestic Violence Act" here on Wednesday. Ms. Kamalam said that proper social awareness campaigns were needed to bring down the atrocities against women. While the State and Central Governments had from time to time come out with laws to prevent atrocities against women, the paradox is that such atrocities seemed to be on the rise. Some of the atrocities against women reported these days were worse than the evil customs that prevailed more than a century ago, Ms. Kamalam pointed out. "It is shocking that such incidents can happen in a State which boasts of being a model in the education and health sectors. Hence, serious social awareness programme in the field is imperative," she reiterated. District Women's Welfare Office A. Laila Beevi presided over the inaugural function.
