Kharge hits out at Deve Gowda

Bangalore: M. Mallikarjun Kharge, President of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee, has urged Left parties to stay clear of Janata Dal (Secular) President H.D. Deve Gowda, who has "revealed his true colours" by breaking the coalition with the Congress to form a government with the Bharatiya Janata Party. Addressing presspersons on Wednesday, Mr. Kharge said Mr. Deve Gowda is a liability for parties which believe in secularism. — Special Correspondent

Revanna to head power corporations

Bangalore: H.D. Revanna, former Minister and elder brother of Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, has been appointed Chairman of three government corporations — Karnataka Power Corporation Ltd., Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Ltd. and Karnataka Road Development Corporation. Mr. Revanna was Public Works and Energy Minister in the previous government. — Special Correspondent

HPCL to launch wind energy projects

Mumbai: Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL) has identified seven sites in Maharashtra and Karnataka for its wind energy projects and aims at generating about 500 MW of power from them in three or four years. "We have invited expression of interest from private parties for setting up facilities in the two States. The feasibility study in this regard has been carried out. Both States have wind potential,'' HPCL Director A.M. Tankiwala said. — PTI

Support for Ananthamurthy

GULBARGA: The Kannada Sainya on Wednesday appealed to Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy to ensure the election of Jnanpith Award winner U.R. Ananthamurthy in the biennial elections to the Rajya Sabha from the Legislative Assembly, scheduled for March 30. Sainya activists, who took out a procession and held a demonstration, submitted a memorandum addressed to the Chief Minister. It said election of Dr. Ananthamurthy will ensure the protection of the rights of the State in Parliament.

Pramod Madhwaraj not to quit Congress

Udupi: Congress leader Pramod Madhwaraj on Wednesday said there is no substance in reports which appeared in a section of the media that he is

planning to resign from the Congress. In a release, he said many political

parties have invited him to join them. He respected their regard for him and his family members. But he is devoted to the ideology of the Congress and has not thought of quitting. "Vested interests" are causing confusion, he said. — Staff Correspondent

VTU to telecast programme today

Bangalore: The Visvesvaraya Technological University, Belgaum, will transmit a special programme to commemorate the 1,000th live session of lectures via EDUSAT on Thursday at 10 a.m. A panel discussion by D.H. Shankaramurthy, Minister for Higher Education; A. Bhaskaranarayana, Director of SatCom, Indian Space Research Organisaton; Shobha Nambisan, Principal Secretary of Department of Higher Education; G. Madhavan Nair, ISRO Chairman, and K. Balaveera Reddy, VTU Vice-Chancellor will be transmitted live from the VTU Studio to all 120 engineering colleges in the State. — Staff Reporter

Die in accident

Bidar: Two women of a nomadic tribal family died and another was injured in a road accident on the Mumbai-Hyderabad National Highway at Mannaekhalli in Humnabad on Monday

Police identified the dead as Sangeeta Nath (20) and Rukmabai Ambaji (25). Anjubai Arjun was seriously injured. All the three hail from Maharashtra. They were seeking alms with a pushcart with portraits of some deities when a lorry hit them. The lorry driver was arrested. A case has been registered.

Takes charge

Bidar: Deputy Commissioner Munish Moudgil took additional charge as Chief Executive Officer of the Bidar Zilla Panchayat on Tuesday. The post has been vacant after Antony Mendonca, a senior KAS officer, was transferred and appointed as Personal Secretary to Agriculture Minister Bandeppa Kashempur.

Raichur: Five students, three from a school in Arkera village of Deodurga taluk and two from a school in Kavital town of Manvi taluk, were debarred from writing S.S.L.C. examinations on Wednesday. — Staff Correspondent

Budget hailed

CHIKMAGALUR: The Chikmagalur district unit of the BJP has welcomed the first budget of the coalition government in the State.

M.K. Pranesh, president of the district unit, told presspersons here on Wednesday that all sections of society have been benefited by the budget, and ninety per cent of the party's assurances to the people of Chikmagalur district have been fulfilled.

Drive gets under way

Madikeri: "Swachata Andolana," a 40-day drive to spread awareness about sanitation in Kodagu district, was flagged off at the Fort here on Wednesday by Subodh Yadav, Deputy Commissioner, and K. Sundar Naik, Chief Executive Officer of the Kodagu Zilla Panchayat. A bus belonging to the Department of Information will travel to 80 villages in the district, covering 47 gram panchayats in the three taluks of Kodagu. — Staff Correspondent
