Insurance firm told to pay compensation

Refusal to replace damaged part of television set

Kozhikode: An insurance company has been asked to pay the price for a television to a customer in connection with a case filed by him against the firm's refusal to replace the damaged part of the set.

The Kozhikode Consumer Redressal Forum, on Wednesday, directed New India Insurance Company to pay Rs.10,250 to U. Prabakaran in this regard. The insurance company was also asked to pay Rs.250 to Mr. Prabakaran as the expenses in dealing with the complaint.

Forum president E.K. Jalaludeen Rawther awarded the compensation.

Mr. Prabakaran who purchased a television from Kainady Enterprises, a dealer in Mavoor in February 2005, had insured his set with the New India Insurance Company till 2007.

He gave back his television to the dealer after it got damaged due to lightening in May 2005.

It was found that the board of the television was damaged. When the damaged board was replaced with that of another brand, the television could not be operated with a remote control.

At the forum, the dealer refused to pay the compensation as the warranty period of the television had expired. The insurance company said the television manufacturer should pay the compensation. However, the forum directed the insurance company to compensate Mr. Prabakaran.
