UDF Government should step down, says Pinarayi

Staff Reporter

CBI finding on SSLC question paper leak

KANNUR: Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan has said that the Oommen Chandy Government has no moral right to continue as a caretaker Government in the wake of the Central Bureau of Investigation's (CBI) disclosure that question papers of all subjects were leaked in 2005.

Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, Mr. Vijayan said the CBI's revelation brought out an explosive reality as it gave credence to the allegations that there were high-level interventions to scuttle the probe by the Crime Branch into the question paper leak case. When the issue had come up in the Assembly, the Government was only prepared to admit that only question papers of three subjects had been leaked, though the Opposition had raised the suspicion that question papers of all subjects could have been leaked, he said. The Government showed lack of commitment to ensure that the Crime Branch brought out the truth. The Govenment was trying to cover up the whole issue, he added.

The CBI's revelation of high-level intervention to scuttle the inquiry could not be brushed aside, Mr. Vijayan said. Even the Chief Minister's involvement in the efforts to cover up the issue was alleged. The CBI's findings were enough to give credence the allegation, he said.

Mr. Vijayan said those who had tried to scuttle the probe should not remain in power even as a caretaker Government.

To a question whether there would be any reconsideration of the decision of not fielding Polit Bureau member V.S. Achuthanandan as party candidate in the coming Assembly election, Mr. Vijayan said party general secretary Prakash Karat had already made it clear that the party's decision would be strongly implemented in the State party.

The CPI(M) State committee scheduled to meet on March 24 would take a final decision on the list of candidates prepared by the State secretariat and sent to party local units for discussion.

"You will get a clear picture after the State committee meeting,'' he said.

As far as the CPI(M) was concerned, the Polit Bureau was the final authority, the CPI(M) State secretary said.

To another question, he said the Left Democratic Front (LDF) would win the Assembly election as the United Democratic Front (UDF) was totally isolated.
