Prevalence of diabetes high in villages

Thiruvananthapuram: The incidence of diabetes and heart attacks are increasing at an unprecedented rate in many villages in Kerala, says Dr. Jothydev Kesavadev, the chairman of Diabscreen Kerala. A medical camp conducted by Diabscreen Kerala at Ayirooppara among 110 persons found that 81 of them had cholesterol values above 200 mg. Of the 81, 53 persons had a cholesterol value of more than 240 mg. This meant that over 48 per cent had very high levels of serum cholesterol, putting them at a high risk for heart attacks or sudden deaths.

49 per cent foreign equity in Federal Bank

Mumbai: Reserve Bank of India on Wednesday allowed foreign investment in The Federal Bank up to 49 per cent of its equity capital. "Foreign Institutional Investors, Non-Resident Indians, Persons of Indian Origins can now purchase under Portfolio Investment Scheme equity shares and convertible debentures of The Federal Bank through primary markets and stock exchanges in India up to 49 per cent limit of its paid up capital," the apex bank said in a notification. — PTI

Inclusion of names in voters list to continue

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The inclusion of names and the making of corrections in the voters list are continuing. They can be done in the six districts that are going for polling during the first phase — Thiruvananthpuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam and Idukki till March 28.

The cut off date is March 31 for the six districts, which come under the second phase of polling — Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode and Wayanad; and April 5 for Kannur and Kasaragod where polling will be held during the third phase. — Special Correspondent

Selected for Sahitya Akademi Award

New Delhi: Malayalam writer T.B. Venugopala Panicker's translation of Thoppil Mohammed Meeran's Tamil novel Koonanthoppu has been selected for the Sahitya Akademi Translation Prize, 2005, the Akademi announced on Wednesday. — UNI

Robbery at petrol pump

THRISSUR: A five-member gang robbed Rs.80,000 from a petrol pump at Ollur, near here, in the early hours of Wednesday. A case has been registered on the basis of a complaint by the owner of the pump. Ollur Circle Inspector Ranjan said a hunt was on to nab the assailants. — Staff Reporter
