Suspension of teachers upheld

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The Madras High Court has upheld the suspension of four schoolteachers for having misbehaved with students during an educational tour in November 2005.

Justice N. Paul Vasanthakumar, dismissing the petitions of R. Elumalai, R. Parimala, P. Sekar and G. Mani of the Government Higher Secondary School at Thandarampattu in Tiruvannamalai district, said: "The allegations against the teachers are very serious ... Students are sent to schools by parents with a fond hope that they will be taught morality and ethics, apart from education. Teachers shall be the role models to students, who spend most of their time in schools. Instead of teaching good behaviour, it is unfortunate that the petitioners have been accused of misbehaviour with their own students. Hence, the suspension order is legal and valid."

The allegation was that the teachers had taken a group of students on an educational tour on November 18, 2005 without permission from the Education Department. They allegedly "misbehaved with girl students in an indiscipline manner, resulting in agitation by parents in front of the school."

The Chief Educational Officer placed them under suspension after they failed to appear before him for an inquiry. Charge memos were issued to them on February 20, 2006.
