NBA: expedite rehabilitation

NEW DELHI:
Representatives of the Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA) on Wednesday issued an ultimatum to the Centre to expedite the rehabilitation process of the project-affected families. NBA leaders are on a dharna outside the Union Ministry of Water Resources here.
"We told the Government that unless they take action to stop the dam construction and review resettlement and rehabilitation in the three States of Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Gujarat, we would step up our agitation," Medha Patkar told The Hindu here as the dharna entered its sixth day.
Ms. Patkar also met Union Water Resources Minister Saifuddin Soz and urged him to intervene in the matter.
The Minister has already written to the Chief Ministers of Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat to give "credible guarantees" that their plans to rehabilitate the displaced families would be verified by gram sabhas.
Ms. Patkar submitted a memorandum to Mr. Soz wherein she said there was proof to show that the State Governments' rehabilitation claims did not fulfil the Narmada Tribunal award.
