`The arrests point to the involvement of an inter-State gang'

MANGALORE: The Mangalore South (Pandeshwar) police have arrested two persons and recovered two vehicles from them. A press release from B. Dayananda, Superintendent of Police, has given the names of the arrested persons as Mustafa alias Mohammed Mustafa (33) of Krishnapura, Suratkal, and Zakria (38) of Badagara taluk in Calicut district of Kerala.

According to the release, the police received information on Sunday saying that Mustafa was trying to sell a van at the Old Service Bus Station here. The police who went to the spot took Mustafa into custody and questioned him. The police also recovered a photocopy of the registration certificate of the vehicle from him.

During questioning, Mustafa reportedly told the police that he and his accomplice had stolen the vehicle and that the registration certificate was a fake one. The police, who continued the investigation, seized the vehicle based on the statement of Mustafa and produced him before a court. He was remanded in judicial custody.

The police said Mustafa is wanted in vehicle theft cases in Kannur, Irriti, Peravuru police station limits in Kerala.

The police had arrested Mustafa's accomplices when they tried to sell in Hassan a bus reportedly stolen by them at Peravuru sometime ago. The Chikmagalur police had recovered nine stolen vehicles from his possession at Chikmagalur four years ago, the release said.

Murthu Sulthan, an accomplice of Mustafa, was arrested in Bangalore when he tried to sell a car in the Vidhana Soudha police station limits. Mustafa had escaped then, the release said.

The release said that based on Mustafa's statement, a police team went to Calicut in Kerala and arrested Zakria. The police recovered a car from Zakria's possession. Zakria is in judicial custody.

Mr. Dayananda says these arrests point to the involvement of a large inter-State gang in vehicle theft cases.
