MANGALORE: Various government agencies under the aegis of the Department of Information launched an intensive publicity drive on Total Sanitation Campaign at Mallur village in Mangalore taluk near here on Wednesday. The organisers intend to cover at least 85 villages during the next 40 days. The campaign will conclude at Haleyangadi village on May 1. Inaugurating the drive, Mamata D.S. Gatti, President of Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat, exhorted the youth in general and elected representatives from gram to zilla panchayat level in particular to associate themselves with the programme in right earnestness. The campaign was formally launched in the district on Gandhi Jayanti at Ganjimath last year and the drive is a continuation of the campaign. A.M. Kunjappa, Chief Executive Officer of Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat, who was the chief guest, said there are 2,30,734 rural families in the district, of which 1,60,650 families have constructed toilets in their houses. Of the remaining, 47,452 are below poverty line families and they do not have toilets of their own. The Government will provide an incentive of Rs. 500 to every below poverty line family as and when it constructs toilets. The agencies overseeing the implementation of the project have ensured that 16,000 of the 70,084 families without a toilet, now have one. Lauding Panja Gram Panchayat in Sullia taluk for taking the lead in ensuring that every family there has an independent toilet, he said the panchayat is in line to receive the Union Government's Nirmal Gram Puraskar. Yusuf, president of Ullaibettu Gram Panchayat, who presided over the function, promised the authorities that the village will meet the targets under the campaign. Earlier, H.P. Ramalinge Gowda, senior assistant director of the department, welcomed the gathering. T.J. Takat Rao, chief planning officer, proposed a vote of thanks. Emilda Pinto, zilla panchayat member, and Mohammed Siraj, were present.
