MANGALORE: A special meeting of the Mangalore City Corporation Council convened on Wednesday to discuss the issue of a new abattoir remained inconclusive as members sought more details. The corporation is examining whether or not to have the abattoir or to repair the existing one at Kudroli since 2001. The idea to have a new abattoir cropped up in 1999 when the Karnataka Urban Infrastructure and Finance Corporation (KUIDFC) included it in the line estimate presented to the corporation under the civic facilities head. Pointing out that an empowered committee of the Government had struck down the new project, councillor Mahabala Maarla said the empowered committee had no power to do so. He said the existing abattoir was in appalling condition and repairing it will be a waste of money. Former Mayor K. Diwakar observed that it will require Rs. 1 crore to modernise the existing slaughterhouse. He pointed out that the corporation had given an undertaking to the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board to restore the slaughterhouse at Kudroli before March this year. Corporation engineers confirmed that repairs have been taken up at a cost of Rs. 3 lakhs. They will be completed before the end of March, they said. Opposition leader Shankar Bhat said the original line estimate was to construct a slaughterhouse in Kannur on the outskirts of the city. It was also stated in the rules that the slaughterhouse should be built away from the city, Mr. Bhat pointed out. The proposed slaughterhouse project should cost not more than Rs. 3 crores, but due to a typographical error it was mentioned as Rs. 14 crores in the document submitted by the KUIDFC to the corporation, which was clarified by the officials of the KUIDFC in the meeting. Mayor K. Ashraf presided over the meeting.
