Students' group stages protest in Tiruvanmiyur Students' group stages protest in Tiruvanmiyur

CHENNAI: Members of the Students Federation of India (SFI) staged a demonstration on Wednesday in Tiruvanmiyur in support of the students of the Sathyabama Deemed University.

They raised slogans demanding the arrest of Jeppiar, Chancellor of the university, for threatening the students, who sought information about the status of the deemed varsity. The SFI also demanded that the authorities concerned initiate action against the deemed university, which had refused to obtain recognition from the All-India Council for Technical Education.

G. Selva, State Secretary, SFI, called for a meeting in which the Sathyabama management, the AICTE and student representatives could sit together with Government officials to find a solution. Only then would the unrest subside, he said.

In a separate statement, the All-India Students Federation State Secretary, R. Tirumalai, said the deemed university students' protest was justified as they were worried about their future.

Pointing to the reports that students of another deemed university had been allegedly suspended, he asked the State and Union governments to intervene and set up a committee of experts, academicians and student organisations to monitor the institutions.
