THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), which has higher stakes in an electoral adjustment with the Democratic Indira Congress (Karunakaran), sounded a cautious note by calling for a conducive atmosphere that would remove the current roadblocks to a negotiated settlement. Talking to mediapersons soon after meeting DIC(K) leader K. Karunakaran, Mr. Kunhalikutty said the dialogues had made good progress till Wednesday, but it received a setback because of the hard hitting statements. Dialogues could be held only if the right atmosphere was set and both sides desisted from making extreme statements, he said. He had briefed Mr. Karunakaran about the strong objection his and K. Muraleedharan's Kochi speeches had evoked. He said that there was still time for working out a formula and, therefore, did not consider the chapter as closed. The IUML had not withdrawn from its mediatory efforts. Mr. Karunakaran, who also spoke to mediapersons, chose to smoothen the ruffled feelings by stating that he respected Congress president Sonia Gandhi as a member of the Nehru family and no one could shake this sentiments. The DIC(K) executive that had deferred a decision on candidates' selection is expected to meet on Thursday.
