THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: World Water Day was observed in the city on Wednesday under the aegis of the Association of Public Health Engineers Kerala. A painting competition for schoolchildren was held in the morning. Eighty children from various schools vied for the top prizes in the competition on the topic `Water and Culture.' The competition was held in four categories. In the kindergarten section, V. S. Sandra bagged the first prize, B. Vishnu the second prize and Apsana Khan the third prize. In the lower primary section, Ajaz Khan secured the first prize, Anjali Nair, the second prize and P. Abhishek the third prize. Gayathri Nair won the first prize in the upper primary section, S. Yadukrishna the second prize and R.P. Aparna the third prize. In the competition for the high school category, J. Gopika secured the first prize, Arjun Prasanth the second prize and Akhil Ganesh secured the third prize. Employees' unions of the Kerala Water Authority (KWA) took out marches and staged protest meetings in connection with the World Water Day. Activists of the Water Authority Employees Union, affiliated to the CITU, marched to the office of the JBIC inside the headquarters campus of the KWA. The All Kerala Water Authority Employees Union (AITUC) began a Water Protection Week programme on Wednesday.
