KOCHI: Container trailer workers have decided to go on an indefinite strike from the midnight of March 26 demanding revised pay and working conditions. The strike threatens to disrupt container movement to and from Cochin Port. The strike notice, served by the Lorry, Mini Lorry Workers' Union (CITU) and the Cochin Thuramugha Thozhilali Union (CTTU), follows what the trade unions have described as the failure of the owners to reach a revised wage settlement. The decision to go ahead with the strike was taken at a meeting of the trade unions here on Monday. Among the demands of the trailer lorry workers is a stoppage to the delay in container movement at the pre-stage facility at the Rajiv Gandhi Container Terminal. A notice from the trade unions said that they had demanded the introduction of the turn system at the lorry trailer terminal. A notice had been served raising these demands. However, since these demands were not heeded, the trailer workers went on a token strike on January 27 and 28. Despite these steps the demands had not been met. Besides, said a statement from the trade unions, those concerned had not given any indication that they would discuss or settled these issues.
CPEO notice
Earlier, the Cochin Port Employees' Organisation (CPEO), affiliated to the Water Transport Workers' Federation (CITU), had served a notice on the Cochin Port authorities indicating an indefinite strike from March 31.
