NEW DELHI: A delegation of the Communist Party of India on Wednesday met Union Minister of State for Urban Development Ajay Maken asking him to get demolitions in Delhi's residential areas stopped immediately and hasten the process of regularising of unauthorised colonies. Demanding strict action against land mafia and corrupt officials, the CPI leaders urged him to spare the poor and lower income group people in the ongoing demolitions. Expressing anguish over the list of illegal properties submitted by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) in the court, the CPI leaders claimed that the list was based on corrupt practices that include non-payment of bribes and to settle personal scores. In fact, it was the common man in Delhi who was the real victim of this mess and confusion, they asserted. The delegation, comprising CPI national secretary Amarjeet Kaur, and party's Delhi unit leaders Ramanand, Mahesh Rathi, Dinesh Varshney and Dhirendra Sharma, also raised the problem of small shopkeepers in residential areas whose families were living on the earnings from these shops. The delegation demanded that mixed land use be permitted and the people who have opened shops in the ground floor should be allowed to continue. The delegation also demanded that laws pertaining to building houses be made simpler to control corruption and harassment of citizens.
