Arrested man turns out to be an AIDS patient

NEW DELHI: A man arrested by the West Delhi police for allegedly trying to break into the Khayala Branch of the State Bank of India here in the early hours of Tuesday apparently turned out to be an AIDS patient who wanted to steal money to fund his treatment.

According to the police, Ram Lakhan, who was found to be in possession of gas cylinders and gas cutters and other equipment, was a welder and had carried out a detailed reconnaissance of the bank in Tilak Nagar. He was aware that there were no night guards and had also worked out the entry and exit points.

Ram Lakhan also allegedly told the police that he was an AIDS patient and wanted money for his treatment. The police are now looking for two more persons who probably helped him in breaking into the bank. Ram Lakhan had managed to cut the lock of the main gate of the complex and had reached the computer room when an alert resident noticed some commotion and informed the police.

Three held for woman's murder

NEW DELHI: Three persons have been arrested by the South Delhi police for allegedly killing a 43-year-old woman and taking away cash and jewellery from her house at Malviya Nagar here on February 28.

According to the police, Chandra Rekha Patiyal, a resident of Khirki Extension in Malviya Nagar, was found murdered by her tenant at around 11-30 a.m. She had sustained stab injuries. One almirah was also found open.

Investigations revealed that renovation work had been carried out in the victim's house a few days before the incident. The police finally managed to trace one of the persons who had worked there as carpenter. The accused, identified as Ibrahim alias Guddu, was questioned at length following which he allegedly confessed to having killed Ms. Chandra Rekha. At his instance, his two accomplices -- Birpal alias Raju alias Bira and Anees -- were also arrested.

The police recovered Rs. 32,000 in cash, one knife allegedly used in the crime, two country-made revolvers with live cartridges, a toy pistol and some jewellery from the accused.

Ibrahim allegedly told the police that while working in Ms. Chandra's house, he came to know about presence of cash as the victim's family was planning to buy another house. He hatched a conspiracy and roped in his accomplices.

Two booked for impersonation

NEW DELHI: Two persons have been arrested by the North Delhi police for allegedly impersonating candidates appearing for the Central Board of Secondary Education examinations.

The police said Abdul Subhan and Anwar Hussain, both residents of Seelampur in North-East Delhi, appeared for the Class XII examinations at Bengali Senior Secondary School in Civil Lines on behalf of two other candidates of Shafiq Memorial School at Bara Hindu Rao.

Charred body found

NEW DELHI: The charred body of a middle-aged man was found in the parking lot of Safdarjung Hospital on Wednesday evening.

The Delhi Fire Service received a call at 8-40 p.m. claiming that a fire had broken out in the parking lot of Safdarjung Hospital. On reaching the spot, the fire personnel found the body of a man with 100 per cent burns.

The dead man was later identified as 44-year-old Tyagi, a parking attendant, who had been working there for the past many years.
