dated March 24, 1956: Pakistan becomes Republic

Pakistan was formally inaugurated as an Islamic Republic on March 23 with the firing of a 31-gun salute. Major-General Iskander Mirza was sworn in as the first President. The ceremony took place inside the Governor-General's House in Karachi. The Chief Justice of Pakistan conducted the swearing-in ceremony. Under the country's new Constitution adopted last month, Pakistan shall be known from on March 23 as the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. But despite its Republican status Pakistan shall remain within the Commonwealth.
