PONDICHERRY: Three silver striped jackal cubs, found abandoned by their mother in lush vegetation of the Perunthalaivar Kamaraj Krishi Vigyan Kendra compound near Ousteri, have found a safe home in the new office of the Forest Department. The month-old cubs are fed with milk, and they are keeping good health, P. Devaraj, Deputy Conservator of Forest told The Hindu . Villagers spotted the cubs some 20 days ago and alerted the Forest Department. Though there were four cubs, one died after a few days due to starvation, he noted. The department is planning to keep the cubs and display them in the deer park, which would be ready in a few months. Jackals are normally found in bushy areas, which are close to human habitations, he added. This is not the first time that jackal cubs were found abandoned in that area. Last year two cubs were found but both died, he said. The department is also rearing a young owl found in Keezhur village. MR. P. Devaraj said public could come and see the cubs during working hours at the department's new office inside the Swadeshi Mills complex on Cuddalore Road.
