Corrections and clarifications

The reference to OBC in the Editorial, "Sanyasin's fiery challenge" (March 23, 2006, page 10) should have been to Other Backward Classes, whose neglect is the plank of Uma Bharti's campaign.

"Protests over job scheme turn violent in France" (International, March 18, 2006) was a report that a French tourist on a flight from Paris to Chennai read with interest. He says the sentence "the new contract ... allows employers to fire employees after a `trial period' of two years" is wrong. The writer Vaiju Naravane agrees with him that the new contract law allows employers to fire employees at any moment during the first two years.

The report "Black panther's day out" (Newscape, March 23, 2006) — about a panther being trapped and then released near Udhagamandalam — portrays the animal as a separate species, says a reader. The Arignar Anna Zoological Park, at Vandalur, clarifies that it is not. A black panther is a melanistic leopard. Mutations cause it to produce more black pigment (eumelanin) than orange-tan pigment (pheomelanin). This results in a chiefly black coat, though the spots of a black panther can still be discerned in certain light.
