DEHRA DUN: Discomfiture within the ruling Congress party here deepened further on Thursday with Bharatiya Janata Party MLAs led by the Leader of the Opposition, Matwar Singh Kandari, and former Uttaranchal Chief Minister Bhagat Singh Koshiary meeting the Governor, Sudershan Aggarwal, and seeking ouster of 15 Congress MLAs holding `offices of profit'. Speaking to The Hindu outside Raj Bhavan, Mr. Koshiary and former State Assembly Speaker Prakash Pant said the law did not permit an MP or MLA to hold any office of profit. Congress president Sonia Gandhi had set a precedent by resigning from the Lok Sabha and now the 15 Uttaranchal MLAs enjoying offices with the status of a Minister complete with perks and facilities must immediately resign. "We have requested the Governor to expel these MLAs if they do not resign from the Assembly immediately. The Governor has assured us of referring the matter to the Election Commission," they said. A similar reaction came from Congress general secretary Dhirendra Pratap and many other senior Congressmen who wanted the 15 MLAs to follow the path shown by Ms. Gandhi by resigning from the Assembly and seeking a fresh mandate.
