Chamarajanagar `jinx' comes to haunt Yediyurappa in Assembly

Staff Reporter

Bangalore: Vatal Nagaraj and R. Dhruv Narayan, elected from Chamarajanagar district, and S.S. Patil, representing Mundargi in Gadag district, criticised Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa in the Legislative Assembly on Thursday for refusing to visit Chamarajanagar fearing that he will lose power if he visits "the jinxed town."

The discussion during Question Hour took a different turn when H.S. Mahadeva Prasad, also from Chamarajanagar district, said Leader of the Opposition N. Dharam Singh did not visit the district when he was the Chief Minister. Mr. Nagaraj urged Health and Family Welfare Minister R. Ashok to visit his constituency so that he could acquaint himself with the pathetic conditions in the government hospital there.

Revenue Minister Jagadish Shettar offered to visit the town. Mr. Nagaraj, who said he had not insisted on Mr. Dharam Singh visiting Chamarajanagar, however, invited Mr. Yediyurappa to come there and rid the town of the "curse."

"I will not commit that mistake," Mr. Yediyurappa replied, evoking criticism from S.S. Patil (Congress).

Mr. Patil demanded that Mr. Kumaraswamy and Mr. Yediyurappa should also visit Mundargi, which too had been considered jinxed by successive Chief Ministers.

Even as Mr. Nagaraj said he is determined to take Mr. Kumaraswamy and Mr. Yediyurappa to Chamarajanagar, the Speaker ended the discussion.
