Kalam fetes Undavelli

Restoration of trains

HYDERABAD: Work on construction of a new bridge between Alluru and Bitragunta stations on the Vijayawada-Gudur section of the South Central Railway is expected to be completed for restoration of train services by the end of April. This was stated in a press release by the SCR while clarifying a news report from Nellore that the work would be completed by March-end and trains restored by April 1. - Special Correspondent

Dalits protest against `discrimination'

Marpadaga (Medak dt.): Dalits of the village on Wednesday night staged a dharna after they were allegedly kept out of the area designated for `Chandi Yaga'.

They, however, relented after TRS MLAs - T. Harish Rao and S. Ramalinga Reddy - intervened.

Later, the organisers clarified that barring priests no one was allowed into the `Yagna Shala'. - Staff Reporter

Counselling for PG medical courses

VIJAYAWADA: NTR University of Health Sciences will conduct counselling for PG medical courses for 2006-07 from April 3.

Registrar P. Jayakar Babu says that the available seats and the university area-wise roster points will be posted on the university website a day before the commencement of counselling. Candidates, who have qualified at PG Medical Entrance Test, 2006, held on February 25, can attend the counselling. Selected candidates will have to report and join the course on or before April 13. - Staff Reporter

ENT surgeon held after patient's death

KADAPA: A Government ENT surgeon Venkataramana was arrested by the Kadapa One Town police late on Wednesday night following death of a girl after tonsils operation.

Lakke Durga, 18, of Masapet here, who was operated upon by the doctor at a private ENT clinic, vomited blood. However, as her condition deteriorated, she was admitted in Rajiv Institute of Medical Sciences where she died. - Staff Reporter

Boy drowned

KADAPA: A 5th class student Pedda Peeraiah, 10, was drowned in a well at Dammanapalle in Porumamilla mandal on Wednesday. He went to swim in a well along with his friends when the incident occurred. - Staff Reporter

Tirumala gears up for Rama Navami

TIRUMALA: Sri Rama Navami will be celebrated at Tirumala on April 7. Special rituals like `Snapana Thirumanjanam' will be performed to the deities at the Ranganayakula mandapam inside the temple on the occasion.

In the evening, there will be a procession of Lord Rama on `Hanumanta vahanam' around the mada streets followed by `Purana Pravachanam' at the Bangaru Vakili inside the sanctum sanctorum. `Sri Rama Pattabhishekam' will be performed on April 8.

Mixed response to naxal bandh

ANANTAPUR: There was a partial response to the district bandh call given by the CPI (Maoist) in protest against the killing of its Penukonda dalam commander and three others by the police in an "encounter" in Chennekothapalli mandal on March 11. Bandh impact was felt in parts of Kanaganapalli, Ramagiri, Chennekothapalli, Bukkapatnam, Kothacheruvu and Uravakonda mandals. Private and APSRTC buses to the remote villages in these areas were off the road since Wednesday night. - Staff Reporter

Two die as lorry overturns

KADAPA: A lorry driver and a cleaner were killed when a cement bag-laden lorry overturned near Gollapalle in Kamalapuram mandal on Thursday. Lorry driver Gantem Chennaiah, (25), of Mangampet and cleaner Narayana Reddy, (20), of Velugupalle in Vontimitta mandal, were crushed to death under cement bags when the vehicle hit a tree and overturned. - Staff Reporter

Seminar on Instructional designs

TIRUPATI: The two-day seminar on `Instructional designs of language teaching' conducted at Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeetha here on Thursday focussed on the importance of having a lesson plan worked out ahead of classroom sessions. Consumer council plea to Railway Minister

Kakinada: The Kakinada Consumer's council at its meeting here on Thursday resolved to request Minister for Railways Lalu Prasad to retain the public telephone booths on railway platforms. It pointed out that the Railway Board's reported decision to disallow public telephone booths on railway platforms was detrimental to passengers' interests. The council said the Railways should provide more and more facilities to the travelling public but not deprive them of the existing facilities. - Correspondent

Five students debarred

VIZIANAGARAM: Five SSC students were nabbed for malpractice in Hindi examination at Gajapathinagaram, Parvathipuram and Salijipeta centres in this district on Thursday and debarred from attending the rest of the public examination papers, said A. Nagabhushanam, Assistant Commissioner (Examinatin) in a press release. - Correspondent

Training for Army recruitment

VIZIANAGARAM: Selection of candidates for imparting training in pre-Army recruitment rally will be conducted at six centres in the district on March 26. The centres are Salur Government Junior College, Bobbili Raja Degree College, Parvathipuram Government Degree College, Cheepurupalli Government Junior College, Vizianagaram police parade grounds and S. Kota Government Junior College. Teams consisting of medial practitioner, PET, police, MRO and municipal official were drafted for selection of candidates.

The selected candidates would be given training for a month from April 3. Candidates who have crossed 17-1/2 years can contact the centres with certificates, according to a release. - Correspondent

Constable ends life

KHAMMAM: A police constable committed suicide in Madhira on Thursday. The police sources said D. Harinath, 25, a constable, committed suicide due to family feud. It is alleged that the constable, who was staying in the police quarters had an altercation with a family member and immediately resorted to suicide. The body was sent for post-mortem and investigation was on. - Staff Reporter

Writ dismissed

HYDERABAD: The writ petition filed complaining against the practice of not auditing the accounts of various Government departments has been dismissed by a Division Bench of the Andhra Prades High Court. Gangadhar, Editor and Publisher of Local Telugu Magazine from Ongole filed a writ petition. The writ petitioner contended that no proper audit is taking place as per the law in the Government departments and exchequer is being put to loss. - Legal Correspondent

Campaign for Polavaram

ELURU: The Communist Party Of India (CPI) will undertake a signature campaign in favour of the Indira Sagar Project, according to its district secretary D. Prabhakar. He said the party had taken a decision to this effect in the light of a demand from a section of people that the height of the dam be reduced in order to reduce submergence. He said the purpose behind the project would be defeated if its height was reduced. About 1 lakh signatures would be collected from the people in the district and sent to the Government in defence of the project, he informed. - Staff Reporter
