Lovers made to realise their folly

Staff Reporter

Raghu and Sharada, both youngsters, had planned to go to Tamil Nadu and get married

Bangalore: Timely intervention by volunteers helped in preventing two ignorant youngsters from taking a step that would have got them into trouble with the law and with their families.

Raghu (15) and Sharada (16) came to Bangalore from Chikmagalur on March 22. They had plans of going to a village in Tamil Nadu with the intention of getting married. Both of them had become friends while working in a coffee estate in Chikmagalur.

When Raghu (name changed) got a call from his village in Tamil Nadu and prepared himself to go home, Sharada (name changed), who hails from Chikmagalur, decided to accompany him, without realising the implications. When the two reached Bangalore, Raghu realised he did not have money to go further. Members of BOSCO, a voluntary organisation working with street children, found them in a state of panic and the two narrated their story.

BOSCO volunteers decided to help them to prevent the child marriage.

Complaint

When they came to Chikmagalur to make enquiries, the BOSCO team found that Sharada's father had already given a missing complaint about the girl at the police station near the coffee estate.

"When we told the boy the consequences if they went ahead with their plan, he realised his mistake. He had no idea that what he had done would lead to complications. We counselled both of them. We also persuaded them to go back to their families. Raghu has lost his parents and the girl lives with her father and stepmother. The lack of love at home seems to have motivated them take such a step," P.S. George, director of BOSCO, said.

He said that the police had agreed to provide protection to the boy and settle the matter amicably.
