BANGALORE: For want of adequate attendance in class, about a 100 students of the Jain college in V.V. Puram were denied hall tickets for the II Pre-University examination by the college management. The management, however, relented after a protest by the students and parents here on Thursday. Among the students denied hall tickets was Nikhil Gowda, son of Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy. Shouting slogans against the Jain college management, the students and parents were particularly anxious as the II PU examination is scheduled to begin on Friday. According to the II PU examination rules, a candidate is required to have a minimum attendance of 75 per cent to be given hall ticket. "The college principal could condone up to 15 per cent," Pre-University Education Director Gonal Bheemappa said. The college principal had reportedly warned the students that they will not be given hall ticket if they continued to be absent from classes. He had also raised the issue at a parents-teachers meeting. But on Thursday, the parents were apparently in no mood to take the management's decision without a fight. Some of them even warned the college management that their wards might resort to suicide if they could not take the examination. As tension mounted, the police took over the responsibility of the college security for a while. Once the students learnt that one of their colleagues had been issued the hall ticket, the situation deteriorated. Eventually the management agreed to issue hall tickets to a majority of the students on "medical grounds."
Ban order
The Bangalore Urban district officials have announced that prohibitory orders will be in force in a radius of 200 meters around the examination centres. Usage of audio equipment and photocopying outlets will be banned in the prohibited areas. The public will not be allowed near the examination centres.
