NEW DELHI: A 25-year-old accountant who had allegedly siphoned off Rs. 21 lakhs from various accounts of his employer by forging his signature has been arrested by the South Delhi police. The police claim to have recovered more than Rs. 17 lakhs in cash and Kisan Vikas Patras (KVPs) worth Rs. 55,000 from him. Rajesh Chawla, managing director of Ajay Air Products in Ohkla, had lodged a complaint in this regard on February 23 with Okhla police station. He suspected the involvement of his accountant, Mohammad Shadab, who had joined the company in October last year and had not turned up for duty since Diwali last. The company did not have any photograph of the suspect and the address he had given was also found to be false. Even the address of the placement agency, which had purportedly recommended him, was also found to be false. Working on bits and pieces of information, the police team -- particularly Constables Bhagwan Singh and Vakil Khan of Okhla police station -- began tracing people who had come in contact with Shadab. They came across a life insurance agent whom Shadab had approached for a policy. For identity proof, Shadab had submitted forged identity documents of Ajay Chawla, younger brother of Rajesh, and affixed his own photograph in place of Ajay's. Subsequently, the police came to know that he had taken leave to visit his hometown just before Diwali. With the help of reservation records the police managed to ascertain that Shadab had boarded a train to Patna. A team was then sent to Patna. Finally, this past Tuesday, Shadab was arrested when he came out of a bank after withdrawing money at Mahendru in Patna. He was subsequently brought to the Capital.
