Reliance gives `affordability' a dimension

Staff Reporter

Local rates for calls made inside Tamil Nadu Reliance achieves a network coverage of 637 towns

Coimbatore: Reliance, the CDMA technology cellular service provider, claimed to have redefined "affordability" with the launch of local pulse on all its telephone services for calls between Tamil Nadu and Chennai irrespective of the segments.

Talking to The Hindu the Chief Executive officer of Reliance India Mobile (Tamil Nadu), V.G. Somasekhar said that Reliance had pioneered in bringing IndiaOne tariff on January 2, while others launched it in March.

He said that since March 15 for any call made from any Reliance mobile, postpaid or prepaid to any phone in Chennai mobile or landline, the pulse rate would be at a local call rate. Similarly, the uniform tariff is available irrespective of the tariff plans.

The only condition would be that the subscriber should have opted for IndiaOne plan that begins at 299, said Ajay Awasthi, Business Head-RIM, Coimbatore.

The facility was being extended to subscribers of Fixed Wireless Phones (FWP) from March 18. The advantage for FWP subscribers would be a three-minute pulse of 180 seconds for one local call unit against the existing pulse of 60 seconds, he said. Reliance had made an effort to pass on the benefit to end customers in the wake of changed parameters in charging Access Deficit Charges (ADC) by the regulatory authority. The Reliance phone users, irrespective of fixed wireless or mobile under IndiaOne plan at Rs 399, would enjoy the benefit of calling across the country at 0.40 paise per pulse. Reliance had achieved a network coverage of 637 towns against the target of 600 within three years of entry surpassing operators who had spent eight to four years in the circle, he pointed out. Reliance planned to enhance its network coverage from 637 to all the 832 towns soon. It was already present in 31 districts including the Union Territory of Pondicherry and 201 taluk headquarters. The next objective was to have the network on all major railway lines and highways , he said.
