KOCHI: The Council for Advancement of People's Action Rural Technology (CAPART), under the Ministry of Rural Development, Government of India, and the city-based Yasoram Charitable Trust have joined hands to launch a Harithagramam (Green Village) programme at Cheppanam, near here on Sunday. The aim of the programme is to create self-sufficiency in vegetable production in the village, said A.R.S. Vadhyar, managing trustee of the Yasoram Trust, here at a press conference. The trust, he said, had successfully experimented with cultivation of vegetables and even coconut trees on its building terrace at the Convent Junction. It had also launched a Harithavidyalayam (Green School) programme in which school children were encouraged to cultivate vegetables. At Cheppanam village, about 60 families will be involved in the Harithagramam programme. The village will be provided with a borewell, water tank, water pump, seeds and the continuing support of experts on cultivation of vegetables. P.N. Srinivasan, director, CAPART, C.K. Padmanabhan, president of the Kumbalam Panchayat, and Ashok Kumar Thekkan, chief executive officer, Vegetables and Fruits Promotion Council Keralam, are expected to participate in the launch of the Harithagramam project. Mr. Vadhyar said that the project had taken a cue from the Kanjikkuzhi village vegetable cultivation programme in which people had taken land on lease for cultivation. He said that there was sufficient land in Kerala available for cultivation to help the State overcome its dependence for vegetables on neighbouring States.
