ERODE: "Tuberculosis is declining in Erode district, " said the Collector, D. Karthikeyan, on Friday, while inaugurating World TB Day programmes.
Sputum samples
Sputum collected from 8,27,079 people were examined. The Collector said that among them 1,20,140 were showing TB symptoms. X-rays of 45,176 persons were taken and they were provided with medicines.
DOTS course
The Collector said after introduction of DOTS course of medicine, the incidences of TB were decreased drastically. He said since 2001 the TB wing has been taking all efforts to create awareness among the rural people about the disease. TB eradication wings are working in Government Hospitals and Primary Health Centres. For every one lakh population, one sputum testing centre is functioning in Erode district, where the TB eradication workers, para-medical staff and doctors are testing sputum collected from suspected patients free of cost. The Joint Director of Health Services R. Shanmugam presided over the function.
Awareness
The deputy directors, Nagarajan, A. Rajasekaran and Sekar, the Government Headquarters Hospital superintendent K.K.A. Hussain Ali and others spoke. Earlier, a rally from Government Headquarters Hospital to IMA hall was conducted.
