Kolkata: The notification for the first phase of the five-phase Assembly elections in West Bengal to be held on April 17 was issued by the Election Commission on Friday, the State's Joint Chief Electoral Officer, N K Sahana, said here. Polling is to be held in 45 Assembly constituencies in the three districts of West Midnapore, Bankura and Purulia in the first phase. Sufficient deployment of paramilitary forces during the elections as well as for aerial surveillance in advance would be made, Chief Election Commissioner, B.B. Tandon said. Different issues were expected to be taken up at a meeting between the Election Commission and the State's Chief Electoral Officer, Debashis Sen. The filing of nominations for the April 17 polls began during the day, Mr. Sahana said. It will continue till March 31. Scrutiny of the papers will be on April 1. He also said that the Election Commission was monitoring the compliance of the model code of conduct, which came into force from March 1. Mr. Tandon recently said that there would be strict enforcement of the code to "provide a level playing field" to all the contesting candidates.
