This Day That Age
The Speaker, Mr. M. Ananthasayanam Ayyangar, called upon members of the Lok Sabha on March 23 to refrain from making adverse remarks against State Ministers, legislatures or Governors. He made the appeal when Mr. C.P. Matthen (Congress) said that the States were not paying enough attention to the development of inland waterways and added pointedly that "Ministers in South India were concerned more with power-politics and linguistic reorganisation of States than with such problems." The Speaker said that there were 20 State Assemblies which were as good as Parliament within a limited sphere. "If some of those members say things against our Ministers, how will the members relish them," he asked. It was wrong on the part of members to make any remark against the State Ministers, legislatures or Government as none of their representatives was here to defend them. Mr. Matthen said lack of co-operation by States in the development of inland waterways was mentioned in the Ministry's report. He, however, withdrew his remarks against State Ministers.
