Dharmapuri: The Department of Animal Husbandry has stepped up preventive measures following the outbreak of foot and mouth disease at Vennampatti near here. According to official sources, two medical teams have been deployed to inoculate all cattle within a radius of 8 sq.km from Vennampatti and Kullanur.
Deadline
Each team led by a veterinary doctor, livestock inspector and field staff has been instructed to vaccinate all cattle within a radius of 8 sq.km from the affected villages before March 28. Along with this the district level teams have been deployed at 26 veterinary dispensaries in the district. The teams have been instructed to vaccinate all cattle in the surrounding villages before April 5.
Fears allayed
Research associates from the Central Research Laboratory in Chennai visited the affected villages. Officials said that there was no need to panic as the situation was under control. Of the total cattle population of 3,97,000 about 1-lakh cattle were immunised in 2005. There was adequate stock of the foot and mouth vaccine and the remaining cattle would be vaccinated before April 5, they said. The department has requested the farmers to administer the vaccine, freely available at all veterinary dispensaries in the district.
